Self-Care is the New Healthcare.

Taking care of yourself can help you avoid trips to the doctor.

If you told me six-months ago I would be writing about self-care, I would've said to you, "I don't have the time."

We are living in extraordinary and unprecedented times. Less than 6 months into 2020, I feel like I'm living in a dystopian society.
Simple phrases like Black Lives Matter & Self-Care, are just as confusing and misunderstood as COVID-19.

NOW more than ever we are being forced to pay attention.
Pay attention to how we think.
Pay attention to our surroundings.
Pay attention to our bodies.
And especially pay attention to how you feel.

As an Emotional & Energy Wellness Coach, I help clients navigate the void left by the lack of inner connection to the wisdom they hold inside.

To navigate this inner turbulence it takes commitment.
A commitment to identifying and understanding the true causes of the blockages that stop you from being you and from transforming your life.
To do this work, it involves patience, time and daily practice. But most of all, it requires you to accept what is, to identify what is no longer necessary, and it requires time to transform into the unique being you are meant to be.

By doing this work, you will begin to reclaim the personal power to fill that void you feel inside you.
And by doing so, you'll understand that the approach to your health and well-being is as customized and unique as you are.

The following are some self-care recommendations to support you in softening your edges, re-framing your stories, identifying what matters, and making space to implement true transformation in life.

  1. Get Out In Nature.
Do you need to feel grounded? Get outside. An article published by Yale outlines the benefits of being in nature. Exposure to the great outdoors reduces stress, promotes healing, and improves cognitive function. So take a stroll in nature to obtain the sense of stability you seek.

  2. Journal.
Feel like a tsunami is stirring within you? Often times we ruminate on things that are out of our control. The fight or flight response within us increases stress on the body and can negatively impact your mental state. Journaling enables you to release the excess energy from your body, process your thoughts, improve mental cognition and induce a meditative state.

  3. Spark Creativity.
Are you feeling stuck? Creativity feeds our soul and helps us soften tough mental edges. Being creative is good for us mentally because when we are in a state of play we have the ability to look at situations differently, realize we have plenty of options in life, and it enables us to connect with ourselves on a deeper level. Regardless if you enjoy drawing, painting, writing, photography or other creative pursuits, it helps to keep a foggy brain at bay and it helps you to access the deeper levels of your soul.

  4. Think of Food as Fuel for Movement.
No more drive-thru dining or gas station snacks. For years I’ve commuted for work and I created the horrible habit of grabbing fast food on the run. Even when I moved closer to my work I still ate out for every meal, every day except on the weekends. What you put into your body hugely impacts how you feel, look, and think. So why not take the opportunity to rethink what you are filling up your body with. Remove the junk food from your kitchen, eat clean healthy food, incorporate more fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and H20. You will not only feel better, but it will fuel your motivation for movement.

  5. Prioritize Yourself.
The reason why it is so challenging to do self-care is because we don’t prioritize it. And this means, scheduling it like any other task or activity you have to focus on in the coming days, weeks, and months. Scheduling a self-care activity should be treated as an important appointment or meeting with yourself. This is the perfect time to create a new routine, identify what really works for you, and eliminate anything that you don’t need anymore. Self-care comes in many forms so whether you’re looking to incorporate more movement in your life, or you’ve always wanted to downsize your belongings, now is the time. The whole concept related to self-care is to make space for yourself, and in doing, so you will begin to see just how important TLC is for you in your life.
