A Summer's Guide to Essential Oils
Earthy lemongrass and citronella, bright citrus, herbaceous basil, and cooling mint.
These are just some of the scents that come to my mind when I take a breath of fresh air on a Summer’s day. During this time of year, I always seek out cooling, calming, and refreshing aromas to fill my home with. Let’s learn about some essential oils for summer and their benefits!
Citronella:
There may be no summer scent that is more recognizable than citronella. A variant of lemongrass, citronella has a bright, earthy, floral aroma that is renowned for its bug-repelling qualities. Used throughout the summer (especially in the evenings), lighting citronella scented candles and oils can protect you from irritants and unwanted bug bites. Besides this, citronella oil can be used throughout the home as a mood-boosting form of aroma therapy.
Eucalyptus:
A sharp, clean, and yet slightly sweet aroma - Eucalyptus is one of those do-it-all types of oils that is just brimming with health benefits. It can help lessen a cough, clear up allergy congestion, remedy a headache, and also possesses many skin-soothing properties. Overall, for anyone dealing with some of the common setbacks that come with summer, definitely stock up on this cooling oil.
Citrus:
Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and limes are seasonally winter-grown, however, their light, fresh, and clean scent reminds us of refreshing lemonades after a day out in the sun. Citrus also has a mood-boosting effect that can keep you energized through the long days of Summer. It also pairs very nicely with another summer essential oil - Mint.
Mint:
Cooling, refreshing mint is perfect for summer. It can be paired with others oils such as citrus or lemongrass but it is also great on its own. Mint oil has many benefits- including some that are especially helpful during hot summer days. Mint oil has a cooling quality, making it very refreshing to consume- and to put onto the skin. It has anti-irritant properties that relieves itch and eases sunburns.
Basil:
Yes, it’s delicious and commonly used as an herb in food - but it also possesses some great medicinal properties! It has a calming familiar aroma that is warm, crisp, and herbaceous that relieves stress, and even soothes a worried mind. When consumed, it relieves stomach discomfort. Basil in all its forms just has us feeling fresh, nourished, and bright.
