My Top 5 Tarot Decks For Beginners and Beyond

My Top 5 Tarot Decks For Beginners and Beyond

As you all now know by now, tarot is one of my biggest passions. I have been a long-time practitioner and am excited to be offering an introductory course on how to read tarot soon! With that in mind, I thought it would be useful to share my favorite and most trusted decks to use for readings.

Here are my top 5 tarot decks for classic sessions and readings for beginners and beyond:

1. The Rider-Waite Deck

When one pictures tarot cards, this is the kind of art that comes to mind. No list of tarot deck is complete without the mention of this original selection as it is ideal for everyone from beginners to traditional masters. Illustrated by Pamela “ Pixie” Colman Smith in 1909, these cards are filled with clear symbolism so that you can start practicing reading intuitively.

2. The Smith-Waite Deck:

A Beautiful rendition of the Rider-Waite deck was crafted in the original colors that artist Colman Smith chose for the deck. This deck is a piece of history as it has the same classic symbolism but with a richer color that may evoke a deeper connection.

3. The Marseille Deck:

For the history buff interested in exploring tarot, this is the card deck for you! With classical images inspired by the original Marseille Deck from the 16th century, these cards are easier to interpret and bring a touch of the past to your readings.

By Rachel True: A modern style deck that while more simple in its design, is still effective for an intuitive reading. True has made a wonderfully beautiful, inclusive, and cleanly designed deck that will leave space for you to weave your own story into your readings with these cards.

5. Revelation Tarot Deck

By Zach Wong: This deck is suited for more advanced readers. When transitioning to more intuitive readings, the concept of “reversed” cards will come into play- and that is where this deck shines. It’s unique as the necessary symbolism is placed both on top and bottoms of each card. With this trick, the iconography can be read the same way even when reversed!

Now, these decks are only recommendations as there are so many deck types and artistic styles out there to choose from. If you are interested in other styles of readings, such as Oracle cards, I have a few recommendations for that as well on my blog. Always remember that there is no such thing as one correct deck to use, so pick the one that speaks to you!

I hope these recommendations guide you to your perfect tarot card deck - and once you find it I have the best news for you! Now is the time to use those cards and hone your skill as I am excited to announce that in August 2022, I will be teaching a 4-week online course on the Basics of Tarot Reading!

It will cover everything you will need to know to go from an absolute beginner to an experienced medium. In this class, we will discuss:
