What is Grace?
Though the word grace can have many different meanings, I find that its least discussed meaning is forgiveness. Forgiveness of others, yes, but also most importantly of yourself. Obtaining grace can give us the ability to move forward- not as failures or victims, but as active participants in our own agency.
4 Things to recognize on this quest for grace:
1. We are all our own worst critics.
When we are being negatively impacted by something, our brain can be quick to place the blame. Oftentimes this means blaming ourselves for whatever could have gone wrong. Remember that we should try to be as kind to ourselves as we are to others. If you would not say hurtful things to a friend or partner, then what makes it okay to say it to yourself?
2. We can all get lost in the “what if’s”.
You may ask yourself in stressful times, "what could you have done to prevent your problem from happening?", "How could we have done to avoid this situation?", "What if I had done this instead?".
Stop for a moment. Calm your mind.
Life is filled with experiences, both good and bad. To move forward we must sometimes accept our circumstances as they are.
3. That change can be scary.
Every experience brings about change. Whether it be change in circumstance, environment, or people, it can all feel intimidating and uncomfortable. However, learning to embrace change can help us fortify ourselves for future obstacles.
4. And finally, that we are enough.
Regardless of what we are going through, having grace is about having faith in our own capabilities. You have navigated through these storms before, and you can do it again. Forgive yourself and others as needed to keep moving forward. And lastly, know that you are enough, in this exact moment.
Take a moment and recognize what you have already been able to withstand, accomplish and grow from. Remember to give yourself patience and grace.
Take that leap of faith,
