The Challenges of the Holidays

The Challenges of the Holidays

What types of emotions does the holiday season incite in you? For me, this time of year brings warmth, a sense of community, and gratitude. It is when I can feel joy in being surrounded by those that I care about. However, with all that happiness can also come a great deal of stress and anxiety, and sometimes even loneliness. We can sometimes idealize these times, and honestly, I know that sometimes we can hide the struggles that we’re feeling!

So, what can we do to rise to some of these challenges that the holidays can bring?

  1. Acknowledge these emotions.

It could be the stress of preparations, or the financial anxiety that scatters across the month. It Is okay to also feel these negative emotions despite the expectations of merriment and joy. Acknowledge these emotions and give them space and time. Reflect and then move forward.

2. Embrace traditions, old and new.

Nostalgia is truly a unique emotion and the holidays are filled with it! However, for those of us going through a difficult time, this sense of nostalgia can often make us feel lonely. Maybe someone moved to a new city far away from loved ones, and miss their old traditions, or perhaps even lost a loved one and those activities no longer feel the same. Know that it is okay to embrace old traditions and share them with others, but that it is also a show of strength to begin new traditions.

3. Gather in whatever way you can.

A holiday gathering does not need to be a big event! Regardless of how many people might be around your table, it is the quality of the company that truly makes it feel special. Also with so many ways to stay in touch, you are just a video chat away from celebrating with those you care about. Gather in whatever way you can to make where you are, feel like home this holiday.

Holidays are not always filled with sparkling fairy lights, warm fires, and big celebrations. For some, the holidays could be a difficult time, making the changes made throughout the year can feel even bigger and more isolating. If you know of anyone struggling during this time of year, for whatever reason, just know that you can be the amazing kind-hearted person that reaches out and makes a difference in their holiday. Spread joy, caring, and kind words because you never know what challenges one can face during this time of year.

Sending you kindness and joy this holiday,

Jackie
