The 4 Ways Your Body Speaks to You
I always try to think of my body as a trusted friend. When it tries to tell me something, whether it be good or bad, I try to listen to it with an open mind. Here are the 4 ways yours I believe our bodies try to speak to us:
1. Cravings
Cravings are usually seen as a negative thing. A lack of self-control, or even willpower. I believe differently - I think cravings are our body's way of saying, “Hey, I need something here!” Now, I’m not saying if your body wants salt then just go eat some nuts - that’s not going to cut it for everyone. So take a moment and listen to your body. Do you need water? Are you craving something warm or cold? Have you had a good amount of fats today (like avocado or olive oil)?
I find that the seasons affect my cravings - I crave hearty, filling, and warm things during the autumn and winter, and then lighter foods over the spring and summer. Regardless, stay hydrated and don’t let yourself feel guilty about having certain cravings. It’s all about moderation, so if your body wants your favorite salty or sweet things, listen to it!
2. Our Lips and Skin
Although a bit obvious, these are signals that we often ignore or just cover up in chapstick. Our skin and lips are great indicators of our health, how the weather affects us, and especially of our level of hydration. However, there can be so much more to it than meets the eye. If your lips are chapped, this is usually a sign you need to up your water intake. What else might be going on though?
Do you have darkness around your eyes? Then should get some rest and dedicate some more time destressing before bed.
Is your skin red and irritated? Check with a dermatologist about what calming or anti-inflammatories you can try.
Are you breaking out despite maybe not being a teenager anymore? It is often a sign that you are stressed out, or even that your hormones might be a bit out of rhythm.

3. Our Hair and Its Condition
You’ll have to pay close attention to this one because depending on the hair type you have it might not be so obvious. The most obvious signs your body is sharing with you are hair loss and hair dryness. Hair loss can cause panic in anybody, but let’s not immediately draw conclusions. Hair loss can be caused by stress, age, hormones, a change in environment, and even the type of water we use to wash it. If you are losing more hair than normal when you brush, it would be a good idea to speak to your doctor about it.
Hair dryness and frizz can be another sign- and it can often be a sign to revamp your hair care routine, and drink a lot more, you guessed it, water. Take a strand of hair and test its porosity. If it sinks then you may have high-porosity hair. If it floats (like mine often does), it is low porosity and will need extra conditioning and moisture. To take care of my hair I try to use sulfate-free products, eat more hydrating foods such as cucumbers and avocado, and up my water intake each day.
4. Our Muscles and Body Temperature
Have you been feeling a chill lately? Or a sense of fatigue in your muscles? This could be a sign of two things: Your body is saying it needs more carbohydrates - and that it is craving movement. Many fad diets try to keep us away from carbs like bread, or pasta but in reality, your body needs some carbs every day for long-lasting energy. Now how to use that energy? If you are feeling tension in your muscles or fatigue, this could be your body asking for engagement. Warm and loosen it up with whatever light exercise you enjoy - be that stretching or yoga routine, or going for a jog.
Our bodies are our “homes” for this life - so let us treat them with respect and listen to them when they try to tell us something.
In the same way that our bodies try to speak with us, the universe does as well! With that in mind, I am happy to announce that this August 2022, I will be teaching a 4-week online course on the Basics of Tarot Reading! So, let’s get together and listen to the universe!
