4 Tips to Maintaining the "New" You
So far you have recognized and adhered to your goals for the year 2022. You have made your lists, hit your milestones, and faced your obstacles- now what? Sometimes the hardest part of making a change is maintaining it for the long term. It can be easy to fall into old habits again- so what are some steps you can take to maintain the “new” you?
1. Prioritize Rest
Getting rest is absolutely key to maintaining change. It supports our immune systems, gives our brains a reset, and is the understated hero of our mental and physical wellbeing. A tired mind will be quick to fall back into old patterns- make sure you stay your strongest self by getting some much-needed sleep, as well as some quiet time for you. 2. Rely on your support system
Sometimes maintaining your goals can take a village! Don’t be afraid to rely on your support system to keep you motivated and accountable. Try to keep your friends and family in the loop to keep yourself on track- and if possible try to find a community of others who may be focused on similar goals as you.
3. Keeping marking your milestones
Whether you use an app or keep a written log, give your achievements the recognition they deserve. For every milestone passed, be sure to check it off. If that means learning 50 new words on Duolingo or reading halfway through a new book- give yourself a moment of recognition and pride. By focusing on the small steps, you can better appreciate the overall journey!
4. Make it a part of your routine
To maintain the “new” you means making the changes you made during your journey into just another part of your lifestyle. For example, if your goal is to move your body more, it doesn’t need to be something rigorous or out of the way. Your daily walk with your dog, or doing some yoga before bed can be all you need to make movement a part of your daily routine. I try to incorporate this principle into my own life when it comes to my journaling, and I find that if I don’t do it every day, I end up feeling off and missing it! Here is a guide I have shared before on how to build a routine.
Remember to try to enjoy the journey, and trust yourself. Maintaining change isn’t easy but I know you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Close the door on old habits that didn’t fulfill you, and keep moving forward to the happiest version of you that you can be!
